How to Prevent Mosquitoes from Entering Your Home

Mosquitoes are annoying at the best of times but when they come into your home, it’s a completely different matter. There is no way to prevent mosquitoes completely but there are some ways to deter them, some of the most useful tips to keep mosquitoes outside include;

Maintain Your Garden

Overgrown vegetation and grass is the perfect place for mosquitoes to rest and survive the hot sun during the day. Keeping your garden maintained will help ensure that they have less space to hide and are less attracted to coming into your garden. The moisture that can be held under heavy vegetation can also attract them.

Invest in a Fan

Mosquitoes are not very big, therefore, it doesn’t take a lot to blow them away. They are extremely weak flyers and can struggle with winds of 1mph. Investing in some fans around your home is a great deterrent.

Get Rid of Standing Water

If there’s one thing that mosquitoes love, it’s standing water. This is the preferred breeding ground for many types of mosquitoes. There are many different ways that you may have standing water at your property and it’s important to do everything you can to get rid of or cover these mosquito magnets. Some areas of standing water are easy to detect and resolve, some are a little trickier. Areas of standing water that you may not consider include;

  • Buckets
  • Drains
  • Watering cans
  • Bird baths
  • Swimming pools
  • Pond/water feature
  • Pet bowls

Ensure That Windows and Doors and Fixed

It’s important to check the integrity of all your windows and doors before the start of mosquito season every year. Gaps in doorframes and windows can both lead to mosquitoes getting into your home, even if all of the windows and doors are shut.

Install Mesh Screens

One of the best ways to prevent mosquitoes and other insects coming into your home is to keep all of the windows and doors shut but in the hot summer months, this is not always possible or practical. Instead of trying to keep your windows and doors shut before inevitably opening them, try installing small wire mesh to your windows. This may not be the nicest looking solution but it can be one of the most effective. If you aren’t a fan of the mesh windows, they can always be taken down when mosquito season is over.
